GoPro Hero 9 is out with a larger rear display. It comes with a front facing screen that seems like a response to DJI's Osmo action camera. The new 23.6 MP's sensor can also record 5K video, shoot detailed 20MP stills and 14.7 MP grabs from video. The battery life is improved (+30%) and the already good electronic image stabilization became even better. So what about the DJI Osmo Action Camera? Is it still worthy or should you upgrade? Lets see some GoPro Hero 9 vs Dji Osmo action facts .

The DJI Osmo Action was the first action camera that came with a screen in the front side

Here are my top reasons for buying a DJI Osmo Action Camera today.

  • DJI Osmo Action has been out for a while. That means that its price will keep dropping. I bought mine for 250 euros. This is less than 300 dollars. Just wait for the right moment
  • A front facing screen makes it perfect for vlogging and selfies. You can also see yourself in action and where you are in the frame
  • Decent stabilization. DJI calls it Rocksteady
  • A nice flat profile (D cinelike) for the best dynamic range possible and lots of color grading
  • Frequent firmware updates improve the camera, resolve bugs and keep it up to date
  • The front lens cover is detachable and can be switched with ease if you destroy it. Plus you can apply ND filters and polarizers to record in sunny days and for long exposures during the day
  • You can expose to your face
  • Nice skin colors
  • You can shoot HDR Photos (AEB)
  • It is waterproof without a case

The Osmo action can record slow motion, time lapses, hyperlapses, HDR video,
HDR stills and 4K. Check the video to get an idea

Now lets see the cons of the camera...

  • Color banding. It does not happen all the time but i guess its a common problem for all 8 bit cameras
  • Is it waterproof? Yes but it is not perfect. Better buy a waterproof case. Sometimes putting the battery back can be tricky and you may brick your camera. Check again and again if the battery compartment latches were closed all the way. Also check if the side port was closed properly
  • Field of view could be a bit wider

Now let's see the GoPro Hero 9 specs:

  • It can record 5K videos - 30 frames per second
  • It comes with a 23.6 MP's sensor for better pictures
  • It can shoot 20MP's stills and 14.7 MP's grabs from the videos you record
  • It has a new 1.4 inch front facing screen and a bigger rear display
  • The image stabilization (Hypersmooth 3) is a bit better compared to Rocksteady
  • GoPro Hero 9 has a wider field of view compared to the DJI Osmo action
  • Better battery life up to 30%. The new battery is 1720mAH

Cons or reason not to upgrade to GoPro Hero 9

  • GoPro Hero 9 is more expensive even if you compare it with previous GoPro releases
  • You need a PC with powerful specs to edit 5K videos and even to watch them. Most people do not even own a 4K monitor
  • The image stabilization is better but the difference is really small
  • Many reviewers and testers found bugs and stability issues. Firmware upgrades will be needed. Previous version of GoPro cameras had similar issues though and many users reported that they lost their footage
  • The image sensor is still small so under low light conditions the camera will have poor performance
  • Batteries and some accessories (media mod) are not backwards compatible and GoPro accessories are expensive

Overall both the DJI Osmo action and the GoPro Hero 9 are great action cameras and you can't go wrong no matter what your final choice will be. At the moment the osmo action price is around 200$ and it is probably the best value for money action camera in 2021. At the end it all depends from the amount of money that you are willing to spend.
