This guide is for youtubers, podcasters, vloggers and content creators that want to improve the sound quality of their video and make their voice sound studio quality even if they use a cheap - budget mic. In this example a ten euros microphone was used to record my voice.
Audacity 2.4.2 - It is free not only as in beer but as in speech too
The first thing that we are going to need is to download Audacity. Audacity is a free and opensource audio editing and recording software that is developed by a group of volunteers. It is also cross platform and that means that this guide (and audacity) is useful for Windows, GNU/Linux and Mac OS X users. The community has done a great job and audacity is user friendly with many add-ons and powerful enough even for professional use!
The steps we must follow:
Noise Reduction
Open audacity and hit the record button. Its the red button on the top of the program
Leave at least a 5 seconds gap before you start speaking so that only the background noise will be recorded
Start talking and stop the recording when you are ready
Select with your mouse the 5 seconds gap of the audio that we mentioned earlier.
Go to Effects and select Noise Reduction. Select Get Noise Profile. The Noise Profile are the 5 seconds that we selected before. This is the background noise that you need to eliminate
Now select the whole audio track with your mouse or by pressing Control and A.
Go to Effects again, select Noise Reduction and press OK. If you are not happy with the result and you can still hear background noise, increase the Sensitivity.
Select 5 seconds of background noise
Compressor
Make sure that the whole audio track is selected. Go to Effects and select Compressor. These are the values you should have:
Threshold -18dB
Noise Floor -40dB
Ratio 2:1
Attack Time: 0.20 seconds
Release Time 1.0 seconds
Uncheck the "Make up gain for 0 after compressing"
Graphic EQ (old Equalization effect)
Go to Effects and select Graphic EQ. Then go to Manage, Factory Presets, Bass Boost and hit OK.
Do exactly the same but this time select Treble Boost and hit OK
Normalize
Go to Effects, select Normalize and press OK
Limiter ( Hard Limiter)
Go again to Effects, Limiter and then Type. Change the selection to Hard Limiter.
Set Limit to (dB) to -3 and hit OK.
A more detailed guide - Youtube
Normalize
Go again to Effects, select Normalize and hit OK
There is a chance that after you apply normalize the level of the noise that you eliminated before will raise up again. You can apply the noise reduction effect again.
That was it. From now on you mic will sound more professional!
