This Windows 10 guide is for all those users that want to disable automatic updates on Windows 10.

When Windows 10 receive new cumulative (or quality) updates the operating system downloads and installs them automatically in the background. Microsoft adopted this approach to ensure that your computer will receive security updates as well as performance and stability patches.

The problem is that those patches may contain or cause additional bugs and disrupt your current task.  The updates also require a time consuming system restart and they can become very annoying.

Lets now stop permanently automatic updates on Windows 10 using the Local Group Policy Editor:

Press Win+R, type gpedit.msc and press Enter. Alternatively you can go to search and type gpedit.msc. This will launch the Local Group Policy Editor. In the left tab double-click Computer Configuration and navigate to the following path: Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates  --> Windows Components --> Windows Update.

Go to the right tab and double-click Configure Automatic Updates. Now select Disabled to turn off automatic updates. Click Apply and OK. All you have to do now is to close the Local Policy Editor and reboot your pc.

In case you decide that you need the automatic updates, just reverse the process. Navigate back again to Configure Automatic Updates and select the Not Configured option.

This guide is not for Windows 10 Home users because the Local Group Policy Editor is available only on Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise edition .

If you like to tweak your system and you care about your anonymity, check how to disable Cortana on all Windows versions.
